It was difficult to be an underground hero when the young Symbol of the Peace was a close friend, twenty of the top heroes in the country were former classmates and long-time friends, and the principal of UA, one of the most prestigious hero schools in the world, was your mentor.
When Shinsou was a teenager, he never imagined that one of his biggest problem as a pro hero would be that he was too famous.

Deku wakes to cold cement beneath his bare back and a suited, purple-haired man looming over him. His mind is fuzzy.
“Good morning. Do you know who I am?”
“No,” Deku says, and for some reason, that makes the man smirk like the cat that caught the canary.
That smirk—it makes Deku’s stomach lurch, but there’s also a strange heat in his abdomen. A part of him wants this. Even if he doesn’t really know what ‘this’ is.

The UA staff room was empty save for Bakugou, halfway through his homemade lunch, scrolling his twitter feed. He didn’t look up when Shinsou came in and busied himself at the coffee machine.
“I oversaw Class 2-A’s training today,” Shinsou began, dumping sugar into his mug. He peaked over his shoulder. Bakugou had gone rigid at the table. “I have to say, it wasn’t very impressive.”
Bakugou didn’t look up from his phone. “I don’t see what the fuck that has to do with me.”
“Well, you are a teacher in the Hero Course.” Shinsou took a moment to stir his coffee, pausing just long enough to have the desired effect. “And Red-Herring is in that class, isn’t she?”
Red-Herring was Bakugou’s favourite student. They had had only a handful of conversations, but she was a perfect blend of Bakugou and Kirishima in every way, from personality to appearance to fighting style. She could’ve been their daughter in another universe. She could also be, much to the consternation of her teachers, and the utter delight of Bakugou, a complete asshole.
“Oh, fuck off,” Bakugou said.
“She wasn’t very impressive either.”
“You want my foot up your ass?”
“She’s too brash,” Shinsou said.
“I like,” Bakugou said through gritted teeth, “that she’s brash. I like her attitude.”
“Well, that cocky attitude alienates her from her more professional classmates and colleagues. And, considering the fact that her quirk and fighting style revolves around stealth and diverting attention elsewhere, it will make her target in the field.” Shinsou smirked over the rim of his mug. “I see why you like her, though. You two have an awful lot in common, with all that bullheadness.”
Shinsou wouldn’t deny that Bakugou had changed since high school—he had, in fact, been actively working to change since the very first sports festival—but for all his anger management, he was still so easy to wind up, especially for someone like Shinsou, who had built a career around being able to get under people’s skin.
Bakugou had never ignored Shinsou like people used to, growing up, and Shinsou respected him for that. He respected Bakugou for a lot of things, like his fighting, his anti-bullying advocacy, and his dedication to his hero work and to his students.
But God, Bakugou was too fun to tease.
“You’re a fucking asshole, you know that?” Bakugou said.
“Takes one to know one.”
“Oh, that’s real fucking mature.”
Before Shinsou could reply, their phones buzzed. He put down his coffee and fished his phone out of one of his many pockets, just as Bakugou pulled his phone out and started swearing vehemently.
“Deku,” Bakugou said, shoulders stiff. “That little bastard.”
“He’s never going to learn,” Shinsou said.
They met eyes across the table, and shared a commiserating grimace. For all that they enjoyed antagonising one another, they could agree on this.

Shinsou opened the door to Class 1-B, and was immediately exhausted by the chaos of the classroom. The longer he spent as a teacher, the more he understood why Aizawa always carried a sleeping bag around with him. The floor looked very appealing right now. It was only his professionalism that stopped him from declaring the rest of the afternoon a nap break, and curling up under the whiteboard. That, and he knew Bakugou really would kill him if he let his students slack off.
“Alright,” Shinsou said, barely raising his voice. “Everyone settle down.”
The kids scrambled for their seats. They were UA students at least, so that meant they were at least partially well-trained. He doubted Bakugou let them get away with being disrespectful.
A girl in the second row—the class president, if he wasn’t mistaken—raised her hand in the air. Shinsou nodded at her. “Yes?”
“Sir, where’s Bakugou-sensei?”
“Busy. Something came up. And yes, that’s all you’re getting out of me. What are you supposed to be working on today?”
“We were working on increasing our offensive strength—” she began.
“New plan,” Shinsou cut her off. “We’re doing stealth training. You need to know how to move around without painting a giant target on your back. Suit up. Let’s go.”

I’ve reviewed the curriculum, and found it lacking in a concerning amount of areas. I’ve attached documents outlining, in detail, the suggested changes to curriculum (across all departments and years).
You knew this was coming. These curriculum changes are, at current, still ‘suggestions’, but if they aren’t implemented, I’ll go through the proper channels and force your hand. This isn’t pettiness. This is to help our kids.
Obligatory threats aside, you may discuss the revisions with me if needed. I can’t speak for all the changes—I’ve spoken with many of the staff and other experts outside of UA to come up with the most effective plan for the future. Recovery Girl especially had much to say about the lack of field medicine being taught at UA, especially in the Hero Course, despite the emphasis we place on rescue training. Similarly, if you have ideas on how to proceed moving forward, you can come to me with suggestions, so long as your ideas are coherent and are actually helpful.
My office hours are 6am - 4pm, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

‘’’’’’not hurting anyone’’’’ lmao ok how about all the kids with ‘’villainous quirks’’ who look up to mind blank (kids like ME) and don’t want to see one of their only idols getting turned into a villain so you can ship him with ~sweet sunshine~ deku and fulfil some weird kink
.
angelmode0:
Calm down? Blacklist exists for a reason. And Mind Blank is pro hero. I bet he doesn’t actually deal with any of the shit you’re talking about
And just because you’re jumping to defend Mind Blank doesn’t mean you have to shit on Deku…
.
autumnalesbean:
no one’s dumping on deku but you have to admit, he is shipped with EVERYONE. there’s this really weird trend in this fandom where fans make one half of the ship Big And Mean to contrast to sunshine-y deku and it’s just… very gross and ooc imo
sorry to jump on a mind blank-centric post, i just… hate this trend and no one ever points it out :/
also @ that person who thinks ‘mind blank doesn’t actually deal with that stuff’ have you read some of the shit the media STILL says about him, compared to the way they talk about other class 3-a heroes? have you seen the way reporters are either super disrespectful or super jumpy when they talk to him, like they’re all scared he’s going to brainwash them out of the blue? have you seen the ‘villain shinsou hitoshi’ tag on ao3 with almost 300 fics - currently the most popular mind blank tag - full of people creating stories where he’s manipulative, violent, sexually predatory and downright villainous? you know, villainous, like a villain, the stereotype mind blank has been working his whole life to overcome??

By the time Shinsou got away from his duties at UA, Midoriya had already been transferred from the large-scale hospital to a more private hospital that specialised in caring for injured heroes.
The woman manning the service desk looked up, saw Shinsou standing there, still in his hero costume, and waved him through. Either someone had warned her he was coming, or she had recognised him as Deku’s ex-classmate. “He’s in room 14,” she said.
They were people gathered in front of Midoriya’s hospital room. Urarka was holding Asui’s hand, squashed between her girlfriend and Iida. Bakugou and Kirishima were sat on the floor. Bakugou’s hands were pressed against his knees, and Shinsou got the impression that he was trying to stop himself from punching the wall.
Tokoyami stood on the other side of the bench. He looked like the harbinger of death like this, stood in the brightly lit corridor in his full hero costume, cape draped around him like a veil of shadows.
Uraraka tried to smile. Her eyes were red-rimmed. “Deku just woke up. Todoroki and the doctor are in there. We’re giving them some privacy.”
Shinsou nodded, and leaned against the wall beside Tokoyami.
“You came straight from UA?” Tokoyami asked, gesturing at Shinsou’s costume.
“I did. You were patrolling during the daytime?”
Tokoyami shook his head. “I am going straight from the hospital to work, hence the costume. I feel ill at ease here in my hero attire, despite the fact that both you and Bakugou are in yours. It feels … disrespectful.”
“Midoriya will be touched that you came to see him, considering your work schedules,” Iida cut in. He pushed his glasses up his nose. His eyes were red-rimmed, too.
“Midoriya is often fair too gracious,” Tokoyami allowed. He cleared his throat, and awkwardly changed subjects. “Shinsou, how are you finding your teaching position at UA? You were only just settling in when we last spoke at the reunion, and I had had too many wine coolers to really remember our conversation if I’m honest.”
Shinsou glanced over at Bakugou. He was glowering at the tiling beneath his boots. He would discuss teaching strategies with him another time, rather than now, when he looked moments away from falling to pieces.
“Productive,” Shinsou said, and with nothing left to do, resigned to waiting for several long hours to see Midoriya, he launched into an explanation of the changes to UA’s curriculum.
[Image: Second year, cultural festival. The class stood together in two rows. Asui was fiddling with the ear prosthetics jutting out from beneath a sailor hat and wig. Todoroki looked as though he was surprised to find himself there, squashed between his classmates and wearing a cowboy hat. Bakugou glowered beneath his combed hair, his face barely visible above the denim collar.
All of them were dressed as famous pro heroes, their costumes clearly homemade. The classroom around them had been decorated in tissue paper and ribbon. A banner hanging above the whiteboard read, Class 2-A Hero Cafe!]

Please come and see Class 2-A’s hero cafe at the UA cultural festival! As the blossoming heroes of tomorrow, we’ve decided to pay tribute to our predecessors and dress as pro heroes we admire. We’ll be serving hero themed food and drink all day. And don’t forget to support the students in other departments, too; they work hard to make today as special as it is. A knock on his apartment door woke Shinsou up. He squinted at the sunlight visible through the slats in his blinds, and then rolled back over and tried to fall back asleep.
The knocking persisted. His phone started ringing.
Shinsou groped around his dressing table, almost knocking over his medication bottle and a dusty glass of water, before picking up his phone. The bright screen almost blinded him. He let it ring three times before answering it. He was a hero, and, unfortunately, that meant that he couldn’t drop off the radar completely. When other heroes tried to contact him, he had to answer them, no matter how irritating those heroes happened to be.
“What is it?”
“I’m outside,” Aoyama said on the other end. There was another round of knocking. “I know you’re home. Come and open the door, mon bon monsieur.”
Shinsou pried himself off his soft mattress, trying to not to wake up Nyazawa from where the cat was curled up in a mound of pillows, and pulled on sweatpants. He stumbled through his apartment half-blind, almost tripping over Barkugou, and opened the door. He squinted out at the harsh daylight.
“What is it?” Shinsou asked again.
Aoyama eyed his sweatpants with disgust. “You were asleep? It’s the middle of the afternoon.”
“Unless I have to go to UA, I’m pretty much nocturnal. I patrol when it’s dark.” Barkugou nosed at the back of his calf, trying to squeeze past him to greet Aoyama. Shinsou kept him trapped behind the door and his legs. “What do you want?”
Aoyama plastered on a brilliant smile. “Hagakure made me see the error of my ways. You see, I’ve been overlooking some of my classmates’ potential. You have heard that I’ve signed Hagakure on to be my top model, yes?”
Shinsou blinked. He felt like he was still mostly asleep. “Uh. Yeah.”
“Isn’t she just wonderful? I didn’t consider her at first, but she contacted me after my last fashion show with the others, and demanded that I put her into my next show, and she was so brilliant that I immediately agreed.”
None of this was news to Shinsou. It had been brought up in the main group chat more than once. Why had Aoyama came to his apartment to tell him all of this?
“You two will work marvellously together! You will be the dark to her light. I admit, your dark eye bags and washed out, vampire-like complexion will be a challenge, but I think I can make it work. Not to mention, purple is my favourite colour. I think your hair would pair nicely with a purple doublet, maybe with some beading or glitter sleeves, I haven’t decided yet—”
“You want me,” Shinsou said, “to be a model in your gaudy fashion show?”
“Yes. We start rehearsals at—”
Shinsou closed the door in his face.
[Video: The camera focussed on Midoriya, his face covered in costume makeup that gave the appearance of wrinkles, a wide nose, and thick eyebrows, wearing a jumpsuit with a billowing cape and a yellow wig. Several people giggled behind the camera. Midoriya shushed them.
“I’m going to go surprise All Might,” Midoriya whispered.
The camera followed as Midoriya attempted to creep down the corridor, the squeaky yellow boots and the trailing cape doing little to help his stealthiness. All Might stood a little down the corridor, hanging up a Class 2-A poster.
“All Might!”
All Might looked over his shoulder, and then dropped his stack of posters. “Midoriya, my boy.”
Midoriya braced his hands on his hips, threw his head back, and said, “Have no fear, for I am here!”
All Might’s mouth opened and closed. “You’re … You’re dressed as me?”
Midoriya dropped his arms. He glanced over his shoulder, making eye contact with the person behind the camera, and then looked back to All Might. “Do you hate it?”
All Might pressed a hand to his mouth. His eyes welled up. Midoriya jumped, and flailed his arms around. “I’m sorry! I know it’s your costume, I shouldn’t have assumed that I could wear it when I know you can’t anymore—”
“My boy,” All Might said in a choked voice, “if I had to pick anyone to wear that costume, I would pick you.” He laid a hand on Midoriya’s shoulder. Midoriya stilled under his touch. “I’m honoured.”
Midoriya stared back at All Might. His eyes grew wet, too. Tears spilled down his cheeks. All Might laughed, and pulled his student to his chest, patting the top of his violently yellow wig.
The camera spun around. Uraraka came into view, her helmet off. Behind her, Iida and Asui were watching with bewilderment.

blirbie: isn’t that the kid that won this year’s sports festival for the second years? no wonder he’s dressed like all might, his quirk is insane
random-degree: @blirbie Yup. His name is Midoriya Izuku. Also known as the kid that broke all his damn bones during the sports festival last year
pretzelski: @random-degree THAT’S THE BONE DESTROYING KID??
hinokofuiuchi: Wait. If Ingenium’s little brother is dressed as him, and All Might was so happy to have Midoriya have his costume (Midoriya AKA that kid that has a Real Similar quirk to All Might), then…..,, is Midoriya All Might’s secret son or something??
invisibilitygurl: Mido, how are you so cute??
no1smallmight: @invisibilitygurl >////<
[Video: Aizawa exited the classroom, sleeping bag under one arm. He saw the person filming, and sighed.
“What are you lot up to now?” he asked. “Wait. Nevermind. I don’t want to know unless you’re breaking school rules.”
The person behind the camera laughed, and pointed a finger. Aizawa turned around, and there, having snuck up behind him, was Shinsou. He was dressed in a baggy jumpsuit, a layered scarf wrapped around his neck, a yellow sleeping bag looped under his arm. His hair hung around his face, long enough to brush against his neck. Black stubble was pencilled on his jaw.
Aizawa and Shinsou stared at each other. Their posture and expressions were almost identical.
Aizawa sighed deeply. “At least it’s you. I wouldn’t want anyone else to run around dressed like me and ruin my reputation.”
Shinsou grinned. He looked vaguely like a shark. “That sounded almost like a compliment, sir.”
Aizawa looked from him to the person behind the camera. “Don’t you have a festival to be preparing for?”]

shadow-dream: omg there’s never earserhead content online!! bless you, class 2a students
serophane: that was definitely an almost-compliment. shinsou’s been in our class for less than a year and he’s already aizawa’s favourite, how did he manage it??
aizmeowa: @serophane i’m just that talented
Shinsou yawned, scratching at his jaw. His stubble was getting too long. He would need to duck into one of the staff bathrooms around campus, and shave before going to class.
Shinsou had his own office at UA. It was tiny, but it had carpet and there was enough room to curl up under the desk and sleep when he needed to. He kept a spare sleeping bag, toiletries, and a change of clothes for that exact purpose. Shinsou had spent many nights here, reviewing countless recordings of field work, going over lessons plans, and writing up the curriculum changes.
His office was decorated more thoroughly than his apartment, curtsey of his ex-classmates. Kirishima had stopped by one day on his way to bring his husband lunch, and had been appalled by the barren, closet-sized office. A few days later, boxes and boxes of his classmates’ merchandise arrived in the mail. Because that was what they all thought he needed: their photoshopped faces plastered all over his walls.
Shinsou squinted at a Tailman poster, squashed between a photo of Hagakure modelling Aoyama’s latest fashion line-up and a flyer for Kouda’s rescue shelter.
Students stared at the photos and posters when they came into his office. There was a girl Shinsou was working to get transferred into the Hero Course who was in there every other week, and she had finally worked up the nerve to ask about the photos on his desk. Shinsou had stared at her, waiting to see if she’d crack. She didn’t, she stared back at him evenly, so Shinsou told her, pointing to each one and calmly explaining them. She had nodded and then, when he was done, said that the photo taken beneath the apple trees at their ten year reunion was her favourite. It was Shinsou’s favourite, too.
His phone buzzed. He pulled it out, and flipped it open, half-expecting to find a text from Bakugou asking if he wanted to grab breakfast from the cafeteria.
It was Aizawa.
Check the news, if you haven’t already.
For a stomach-dropping moment, Shinsou thought Midoriya had ended up on the wrong side of a fight again. A fight that, this time, he hadn’t managed to walk away from.
Except Midoriya’s recovery was progressing without complications. He was due to be discharged soon. Unless someone had gotten into the hospital, Midoriya would be fine, and even then, Todoroki would take down anyone that breathed wrong in his fiancé’s direction.
His phone vibrated a second time. Aizawa, again.
Come to my office when you’re ready.
Shinsou exited out of the text, and swiped over to the news app. He scrolled down. There were no photos of a bloodied Midoriya, this time; no terrorist attack, or sudden death, or long-fought battle with his ex-classmates in the centre of it all.
But a rock lodged in his throat, nonetheless.
He put down the phone. He stared at that photo of their reunion again, twenty former classmates standing side-by-side, twenty-something people who had the full force of the media focussed their way. The bright pillars of heroics, gathered underneath a blossoming fruit tree.
Shinsou should’ve known something like this would happen eventually.
When his hands felt steadier, he picked the phone back up and texted Aizawa.
On my way.

In regards to No. 49
In the wake of Mind Blank’s recent ascent to No. 49, it’s become obvious to me how many people don’t understand what an underground hero actually is. So I’m here to explain what underground heroes do, why they’re important, and why they shouldn’t be officially ranked or included in publicity campaigns like other pro heroes.
But Hero Girl! you cry. Mind Blank is an underground hero and he’s officially ranked now!
Yes, he is. And I’m here to explain why that’s not a good thing.
Underground heroes operate outside of the public sphere. That means they don’t have a PR team. They don’t have merchandise deals. They largely work at night and outside the CBD (Central Business District), and their activities aren’t reported to the media in the same way conventional pro heroes often are.
But Hero Girl, you interrupt again, Mind Blank ends up on news sites all the time!
Mind Blank and Tsukuyomi are outliers when it comes to underground heroes, because they’re members of the insanely famous Class 3-A.
(And yes, Tsukuyomi is technically an underground hero, too. You can go to this blog post I made a few years ago to read more about how he blurs the lines between pro and underground hero.)
The media won’t let these two disappear into the shadows in the way underground heroes should because, as we all know, the media is obsessed with Class 3-A. They were forced into the spotlight in the way most underground heroes just weren’t. Mind Blank is the Symbol of Peace’s classmate and close friend. He constantly crops up on famous heroes’ social media. He fought side-by-side with current No. 4, Polarise, to protect UA during the July Attacks when they were third years.
So why is this a problem? Most heroes would kill for this kind of publicity.
That brings me to my next point: Mind Blank’s quirk.

Shinsou scrubbed a hand through his hair. He almost wished that Aizawa kept whiskey in his desk, but neither of them drank often, if at all. They were trained heroes with a combined 30-something years of experience between them, and old habits died hard. And, Shinsou was finding, there was something about having dozens of baby heroes under your care that made it difficult to let go of your self-awareness for even a day.
“I would congratulate everyone else,” Aizawa said, pouring him more tea. Shinsou stared at it, knowing it would never be strong enough, while also knowing he would never drink on school grounds.
“But not me,” Shinsou said.
“We both know this isn’t a good thing.”
Shinsou nodded. He didn’t reach out and take the cup of tea. Instead, he clasped his hands together in his lap, twisting at his fingers, staring at the burns on his wrist from a training session with Bakugou three days ago
“Hey.” Shinsou looked up. Aizawa stared at him evenly from across the desk, his eyes intense. “You joined UA for this exact purpose. This isn’t game-over; it means you need to focus more on your teaching career, rather than your hero one.” Shinsou looked down again, and Aizawa said, sharper, “Hitoshi.”
He felt a little like he was being scolded by a parent. It wasn’t a bad feeling, or even an odd one; he had known Aizawa since his first year of high school, when Aizawa had cornered him outside the Gen. Ed classrooms and told him, evenly, “You’re not ready to join the hero course. But you could be.”
“You’re only twenty-five,” Aizawa said. “Class 3-A was an outlier. Most heroes are only just beginning to graduate from sidekick to solo pro when they’re your age. You have more than enough time to sit back and wait.”
“I feel like if I hesitate, everything will pass me by.”
“Maybe that was true seven years ago, but you’re more noteworthy than you think. They’ll wait for you.” Aizawa pushed the cup of tea across the table. This time, Shinsou took it. “You’ve done enough.”
Shinsou sipped his tea, and didn’t say anything.
He’d dreamt about this when he was a kid. It wasn’t realistic, it was a set back, career wise. Underground heroes weren’t supposed to be ranked, that was a staple of their jobs, but if they grew popular enough, sometimes they snuck into the hero rankings despite convention. Tokoyami had certainly ended up in the hero rankings enough times. It never really bothered Tokoyami, who had walked the fine line between 'mainstream' and 'underground' hero with ease, but Shinsou's quirk relied on catching people off guard. If the villains knew about his quirk ahead of time, he was put at a dangerous disadvantage.
Shinsou knew that, but he couldn’t help the happiness that settled in his chest, right behind his sternum. He was in the Top 50, officially. No one could argue that Shinsou Hitoshi was a proper hero.
“You’re gotten sentimental in your old age,” Shinsou said to Aizawa, like they both didn’t know how much he had needed to hear all of that.
“I am still your boss. Don’t forget that.”
Shinsou sipped at his tea, and then paused. “You don’t like tea.”
“My predecessor always offered it to passing visitors. It felt … fitting that I continue the tradition.”
Shinsou nodded. Aizawa didn’t like speaking of it, but Nedza had been Aizawa’s homeroom teacher when he was a student. He had seen the toll Nedza’s passing during the July Attacks had taken on his mentor.
“I’m sure your former classmates will want to celebrate, I’m sure,” Aizawa said, swiftly changing the subject. Shinsou grimaced, and Aizawa coughed out a dry laugh. “Try to enjoy it.”
“I’ll do my best.”

I woke up this morning to the hero rankings and started crying. It’s not that big of a deal, Mind Blank is already decently famous, but it just made me feel so happy to see someone like me that’s a hero (1/?)
blue @curiousbluepencil
My quirk is Enhanced Telepathy. I can hear what people are thinking or, if I concentrate, I can digging through people’s minds. I never use it on people who haven’t given me the ok, but my classmates are all scared of me (2/?)
blue @curiousbluepencil
People with mind-altering quirks are always cast as the villain in movies. I want to do good with my quirk. I want to be a hero. I also just to want to live a life without everyone around me flinching away like I’m something terrible or disgusting (3/?)
blue @curiousbluepencil
Today, I didn’t see someone like me that was cast as the villain. Today, Mind Blank made it to No. 49. Someone like me is in the Top 50. Someone like me uses their power to do good. (4/?)
blue @curiousbluepencil
I’m tweeting this during my lunchbreak. 5 of my classmates have already come up to me to talk about Mind Blank. My backpack is covered in MB pins so it’s not a secret I’m a fan, but they also talked to me about MY QUIRK for once (5/?)
blue @curiousbluepencil
I know he doesn’t have a twitter and will probably never see this, but I just wanted to say thank you to Mind Blank. Your hard work means more to me than I can say. (6/6) #MindBlank #QuirkDiscrimination

@curiousbluepencil I was in the same place as you when I was growing up. I was bullied or outright ignored by everyone until I entered UA, found worthwhile people who respected me for me, and made progress in becoming a hero.
Detonation @king.deathonation
@curiousbluepencil Your quirk isn’t evil. If anything, it sounds like it would be incredibly helpful to a lot of people. You would know what a villain was going to do before they’d done it, not to mention how useful you would be in police interrogations
Detonation @king.deathonation
@curiousbluepencil Don’t give up, Blue. Ignore the ignorant comments of people around you. You’re more than what people think you are.

There were still bruises on Midoriya’s face and his arm was still in a sling, but he was well on his way to a full recovery. The way Midoriya had looked on that hospital bed—a ventilator hooked up to his face, bloodied beneath a swath of switches and bandages, Todoroki bent over his knees by his bedside, hands clasped together like he was praying—stuck with Shinsou even now, weeks later.
Midoriya hadn’t returned to field work yet, but he was well enough to go out for coffee with them. There was something off about him, Shinsou thought when he met them in front of the cafe, handing Barkugou’s lead over to Todoroki. It wasn’t the bruises, or the stitches still fixed into his cheek, and then he realised; Midoriya had bags under his eyes, like he hadn’t been sleeping.
Todoroki had mentioned that Midoriya was on some medications, antibiotics and such, to assist his recovery. Maybe it kept him up at night.
Shinsou pushed the thought away, and they went to find a table. They settled into one outside, underneath a flowering tree. Barkugou scampered under the table, and sniffed at their shoes and clumps of fallen leaves.
“Aizawa says working at UA will give me time for my popularity to die down,” Shinsou said, “but this happened after I already joined up.”
Todoroki sipped at his coffee. “Getting coffee with Number One hero probably doesn’t help your problem.”
“Or the Number Four,” Midoriya said, nudging his fiancé with his elbow, before turning his attention back to Shinsou. “It’s not going to be bad for you, is it? Coming out with us?”
Shinsou tapped his black surgeon mask. “I have this.”
They both stared at him.
“You have naturally purple hair,” Midoriya said slowly. “That’s kind of a give away.”
“Especially next to us, since we’re both so easily identifiable,” Todoroki said. Midoriya opened his mouth to argue, but Todoroki cut him off, “You have green hair, your face is plastered all over the country—”
“I’m plain,” Midoriya mumbled.
“—and you’re the most handsome man in Japan. You would turn heads even if you weren’t famous.”
Todoroki and Midoriya locked eyes for a moment, and Shinsou pretended to be busy on his phone, even if he was just checking Neko Atsume. His notifications told him that Bakugou had sent him some an email about the teaching schedules in the lead up to exams, but that could wait for later. In Shinsou’s opinion, Bakugou could always use an extra lesson in patience.
Shinsou gave them a few minutes, and then cleared his throat loudly. They jumped. Todoroki was suddenly fascinated by his coffee mug, and Midoriya flushed.
“Sorry,” Midoriya said. “But really, how are you holding up?”
Shinsou shrugged. “I’m fine.”
Midoriya and Todoroki glanced at each other again. “If you’re sure,” Midoriya said.
Shinsou stared at his empty mug. He was considering ordering another coffee, when Todoroki said, “Ah. It seems we’ve finally been spotted.”

[Video: A public beach during summer. Bakugou stood in the water, glaring at a pack of teenagers who were watching him. He didn't notice that he wasn’t alone until Midoriya crept up from behind and tackled him. They went down hard, disappearing under the waves.
“Are they going to kill each other?” Ashido asked from behind the camera.
Bakugou and Midoriya wrestled in the water. Only the occasion flailing fist or foot could be seen splashing out from the foaming water.
The camera turned to look at Todoroki and Kirishima, watching the spectacle on the shore.
Todoroki turned to Kirishima. “If our significant others kill each other, are we then morally obligated to marry each other?”
“Hell yeah,” Kirishima said, slinging an arm around Todoroki’s shoulder. “We’d be kick-ass husbands, dude.”
“I don’t snore,” Todoroki said.
“Oh, god. Katsuki does. Let’s just leave those two to it and get married right now. Shinsou, will you officiate for us?”
Shinsou looked up from his phone. He was squashed under a small beach umbrella, his face covered in purple zinc. “What makes you think I can legally officiate weddings?”
“A hunch? I don’t know, man. You just give off that kind of aura.”
“I can google it,” Shinsou offered. “I heard you can get a license online.”
“I knew you would pull through for us, dude.”
“Dibs on being maid of honour!” Ashido said.
The camera panned back around. Neither Bakugou nor Midoriya were visible. The water was still, nothing moving beneath the gentle waves. The nearby teenagers looked horrified, like they had just watched the dual murder of two popular, up-and-coming heroes.]

Urarka threw a party at her town house three days after the yearly hero ranking was realised. It wasn’t a large house, but it afforded them the privacy they wouldn’t have had at a public restaurant or bar. Less than half of their classmates were there—a reasonable turn out, considering the short notice—along with a handful of heroes and sidekicks that Shinsou hadn’t met before.
Chips and dip were placed strategically around the living room. People spilled out from the main around into the courtyard garden, chattering over the softly playing music.
By the drinks table, Uraraka was accepting congratulations and hugs from Midoriya. Most of his stitches had come out, even if there was still mottled bruising around his neck and collarbone.
People came up to congratulate Shinsou, too, even if it was with a wry twitch of their lips, like they found the idea of an underground hero being included in the official rankings funny. It was well-meant, but Shinsou found himself missing Tokoyami, the one person who could properly understand what it meant to end up in the Top 50, a place thousands of hero hopefuls wished desperately to be, only to resent it.
Bakugou approached him an hour into the party.
“You managed to climb onto the hero ranking after starting as a teacher,” Bakugou said, peering into his cup of warm beer.
“I started at UA so I could let my fame die down. That was part of the reason, anyway.”
Bakugou scowled, and swished his beer around. “I meant that you’re popular, even though you’ve cut your hero hours in half.”
“Ah,” Shinsou said. He put down his cup of juice, lacing his fingers behind his back. “You’re concerned about your own popularity?”
Bakugou’s mouth curled, and he looked around the party like he was looking for a convenient exit, but he didn’t run. He stood his ground, and gritted his teeth, and said, “I don’t know how I’m still Number Two. That bald bastard was active this past year. He might surpass me, if I’m not careful.”
“You don’t have the time to be careful,” Shinsou said, eyeing Bakugou carefully. “You have students who depend on you, now.”
“You think I don’t know that? I didn’t start at UA so I could half-ass this teaching shit and get my kids killed.”
“Would it be so bad if Yoarashi did surpass you?”
Shinsou tipped his head to one side, watching Bakugou. He was having the opposite problem to Shinsou, who’s spike in popularity had brought him mostly stress, but it felt the same, somehow. Shinsou hadn't realised Bakugou was worried that the current Number Three, Yoarashi Inasa, might surpass him.
He had hated Bakugou at school. That first confrontation before the sports festival, when they were fifteen years old and near wild with the need to prove themselves. And again, on the first day of their second year, when Shinsou officially transferred to Class 2-A, and Bakugou had looked him up and down slowly and then laughed, like Shinsou was nothing but dirt, like he was a joke.
But this wasn’t high school. They weren’t the same men as they were then. Bakugou wasn’t the same kid when he graduated UA, and he certainly wasn’t that boy now, edging into twenty-six, torn between his lifelong dream of heroism and fame, and looking after the vulnerable, bright-eyed kids under his care.
“No,” Bakugou said, like this surprised him, like he wasn’t sure how he had ended up here, in Uraraka’s overcrowded living room, drinking warm beer and seriously considering dropping to Number Three. “It wouldn’t be the end of the world.”
“You won’t be surpassed.” Todoroki joined them in the corner, hands in the pockets of his jeans. He wasn’t drinking tonight. Shinsou wasn’t sure if that was in solidarity with Midoriya, whose medication didn’t allow him to drink, or so he could make sure everyone got home safely.
“Who the fuck asked you?” Bakugou said.
Todoroki stared back at Bakugou coolly. “Yoarashi is powerful, but he isn’t anywhere near as popular as you are. Not to mention, you regularly undertake important missions when you have the time and you join Kirishima on patrols every other week, despite being busy teaching. And you underestimate how famous UA is. The young Number Two, returning to his home city to teach at the high school where he kick-started his career and his love-life? It’s a becoming narrative.”
Bakugou didn’t say anything for a moment. Then, he scoffed, and said, “All these years with Deku are paying off.”
“He grows on you,” Shinsou said.
“Like mold,” Bakugou agreed.
“You’re not becoming irrelevant,” Todoroki said, ignoring them. “You’re not going to suddenly fall from the hero ranks. Maybe one day, years from now, someone will overtake you, but isn’t that a fear we all have to live with, no matter who we are?”
“I think you said more words just then than you have this entire year,” Shinsou said.
They fell silent. It was strange being around Bakugou and Todoroki, sometimes. He had regular contact with the both of them, due to their jobs and their relationships with Midoriya and their other classmates, but somewhere along the way; somewhere between the July Attacks, when he had worked closely with Todoroki, even though their quirks were worlds apart; somewhere between the time Bakugou accepted a position at UA and Aizawa emailed a job request to Shinsou several months ago, they had become friends themselves.
“Thanks,” Bakugou said, almost under his breath.
Todoroki nodded. “At least it’s you. I didn’t want the position of Number Two to be tainted forever.”
Bakugou stared at Todoroki like he was at lost for words. Shinsou picked his juice back up, so he’d have something to do with his hands. They had all been there for Endeavour’s trial. It felt like the whole world had been there. They knew what Todoroki meant.
“Thanks,” Bakugou said, and sculled the rest of his beer in two mouthfuls, like he was getting rid of a bad taste in his mouth.
Iida arrived ten minutes after that, panting and in his full hero costume.
Asui opened the door and Iida tumbled into the entryway, almost knocking over the coat rack. He bowed to her, and then to Uraraka, and held out a wrapped gift. She opened it. It was a bottle of champagne that bubbled up and over Uraraka’s fingers when she opened it, fizzling out onto the wood flooring.
“Oh,” Iida said, staring at the spilling bottle. “I’m sorry—I ran here, I should have realised—”
But Uraraka just laughed, and closed her mouth around the bottle to stop the bubbles from getting anywhere else. Asui ducked into the kitchen to grab a cloth.
“I’m not drinking out of that,” Bakugou said.
Uraraka pulled away from the bottle, gasping for air. “I wasn’t going to let you, anyway. I’ve officially claimed this whole bottle for myself.”
After another round of congratulations and hugs from Iida, she swept him into the bedroom to change out of his hero costume.
“I didn’t bring anything,” Iida protested.
Uraraka laughed, champagne bottle held above her head, pushing Iida along with one hand. “You can borrow some of our stuff.”
“ … I don’t think I’ll fit.”
“No, but you’ll look good!”
Shinsou settled onto the couch by Midoriya’s side. “Should we help him?”
Midoriya didn’t answer, sipping at his juice to hide his smile. When Iida emerged, almost ten minutes later, he was in a shirt so small that most of his stomach was showing, and a pair of sweatpants tight around his thighs, ending just below his knee.
Kirishima wolf-whistled. The girls by the drinks table started clapping.
Iida pushed his glasses up his nose, face pink, but he was smiling. Uraraka cackled with laughter. In one hand, she held the open champagne bottle, and in the other, she was taking photos of Iida with his phone, dancing around him to find the perfect angle.
Midoriya watched Iida and Uraraka, chewing at his lip, his gaze far-off. “I scared them.”
Shinsou didn’t need to ask what he was talking about. “You haven’t injured yourself like that in a while. I think everyone had thought that you were getting better at it.”
“It’s unavoidable, sometimes,” Midoriya said in a low murmur, barely audible above the music. “I know everyone else disagrees with me, but … sometimes, you have to do that. And it’s good, I think, to show the country that no matter what, you’re going to get back up and keep pushing forward. That you’re going to give your everything and then some in order to save them.”
“I completely disagree,” Shinsou said. He thought about going to the hospital to visit Midoriya and finding his friends huddling in the hallway; Bakugou with his body pulled tight like a cocked gun, arms around his knees; Uraraka and Iida with their matching, red-rimmed eyes; Kirishima, back straight, hands in fists, keeping calm so he could be there for his husband; and Asui and Tokoyami’s grim patience, because this wasn’t anything new, because this—like the nightmares that left you shivering and panting in the middle of the night, and the scars, and the innocents you couldn’t save but never forgot—was another terrible part of being a pro hero.
He thought about the cold feeling in his own stomach whenever he got a notification from the group chat entirely dedicated to keeping track of Midoriya’s injury.
“But maybe that’s why you’re the Symbol of Peace,” Shinsou said.
“Are you angry?” Midoriya asked.
“No. I don’t think we’d be friends if I got angry every time you got badly injured.”
“I’m not going to apologise, either, but … ”
“But?” Shinsou prompted. Midoriya didn’t answer.
Shinsou watched Uraraka plead with Iida to let her upload the photos to Twitter, his face going redder and redder, and more and more of the champagne spilling onto the floor without either of them realising. He glanced back at Midoriya. He was staring at his phone. His lock screen was a photo of All Might, emancipated and framed by flourishing apple trees, smiling, droplets of blood staining his button up.
“I think they’re scared that I’m going to follow in Toshinori’s footsteps,” Midoriya admitted, voice almost a whisper, “but … what else can I do?”
Shinsou put a hand on Midoriya’s knee, and he sagged under the small touch. Shinsou didn’t initiate physical contact often, but the way Midoriya looked right now, cradling his phone between his knees, his skin pale after extended bed rest, made something in his chest clench.
“Move forward,” Shinsou said, looking at Bakugou and Todoroki arguing over an almost-empty bowl of chips rather than at Midoriya’s sharp eyes. “That’s all we can do. Move forward, and know our dreams aren’t going to slip away from us, and—”
“And keep smiling.” Midoriya snagged Shinsou’s hand and bounded to his feet, still holding onto Shinsou, shaking his hand up and down like they were meeting for the first time. “You’re right. You’re right! I’ve been so hung up on this, and I just—just—”
“Everyone has been,” Shinsou said.
Midoriya grin was so bright it was almost painful. He shook his hands again before bounding away, calling, “Shouto, I’m going to go back to field work tomorrow!”
Todoroki and Bakugou stopped arguing. They stared at Midoriya with almost identical expressions. “You’re what?” Bakugou said at the same time as Todoroki said, strained, “Izuku.”
After Midoriya had brushed away everyone’s concern and had only been persuaded not to call up his hero agency to announce his return because it was so late at night; after Iida had given in and allowed Uraraka to post a photo of him to twitter; after Asui had convinced Uraraka to switch from champagne to water, and Kirishima had moved outside to stat up barbecue, Midoriya found him again.
Shinsou had moved outside to eat. Midoriya sat down beside him, and almost immediately, Kirishima loaded up his plate with skewers of meat and vegetables.
“Got to feed the growing hero,” Kirishima teased, scrubbing his hand through Midoriya’s curls so that they stuck up in the back, and moved back to supervise the cooking food.
Midoriya picked up a kebab, eying Shinsou’s half-full plate. Shinsou took the hint, and picked his burger back up.
“Sorry about earlier,” Midoriya began. “I know you’re struggling with the hero rankings. You’re probably stressed out, too.”
“It’s fine.”
Midoriya shook his head. “You probably just want this hype to die down, but I just wanted to say … Congratulations. I’m proud of you.”
Under the table, Midoriya knocked their sneakers together. The outside area wasn’t big, especially compared to Toshinori’s country estate, the last place they’d gathered together like this, with its open fields and thriving apple orchard, but soft music and chatter trickled out from the back door, and their friends were visible from the outdoor table, dancing off-beat in the living room. When Bakugou caught Shinsou looking, he flipping him off. Kirishima caught the gesture, and blew a kiss. Bakugou flipped his husband off, too, but Kirishima only laughed and flipped him off in return.
“Is it wrong,” Shinsou said, just loud enough to be heard over the music, just low enough that only Midoriya could hear him, “that I’m kind of proud, too?”
“No,” Midoriya said with that bright, rallying smile. “It’s not wrong.”
