Mari lives, but nothing is going right anyway. Sunny thinks going to a place nobody can follow him to will change things back. He just needs to prepare his friends so they will get back together before he ends it, he's sure. He didn't think they'd hold onto him so tightly, though.

It started with individual keys, testing the pitch, pressed so so carefully as though making too loud a sound would shatter it to pieces. Then chords, in order, just to see if he remembered them. And then the chords came out of order, in a different order, to the tune of her favorite songs, and it was like she was still there.
A look into how the scene with Hero and Sunny in the piano room might look like if Sunny had coped a little differently.

He broke the violin. Pitched it down the stairs to feel a brief sense of satisfaction as it smashed against the ground, the sheet music settling over it like snow drifting to the ground. He immediately regretted it.
Mari, getting ready in their room, came rushing out at the noise, and when she saw the mess, she began to yell. Sunny was frightened, Mari had never yelled at him before, but he argued back. He couldn’t yell, but he made his frustration known.
They both said things that they would regret. And Sunny, signing as he spoke as was his habit, used his hands to send a message.
Mari fell down the stairs.

Unable to accept his sister's imperfections, rather than becoming an extreme introvert, Sunny becomes an extreme extrovert: a narcissistic, constantly smiling beacon of optimism who idolizes Mari like a goddess. Only time will tell how long Sunny will live in denial. When the truth is uncovered, an image of perfection will be shattered.

It can be a little sad at times, because life hurts, but the majority of it is just shenanigans.

summary
Sunny never really understood the true feeling of the word ‘ache’.
At first, he thought it meant a pain that follows you around, shadowing you wherever you go. Mari’s death to him was an ache, a ghost that haunted every facet of his life, lurking in every dark corner whenever he turned around. The dictionary definition certainly backed that up, “a continuous or prolonged dull pain in a part of one's body.”
But perhaps not. Whenever he read books or comics, it was never used in that way.
See, the dictionary definition of ache spoke of pain. But, in the stories he read, it was always about longing. A pang of emptiness in your heart for someone who won’t turn around and look behind them to see you, standing there, waiting for them. Of yearning, hoping for someone you’d never have.
(Or: Sunny isn't forgiven. He attempts to move on regardless.)
